City of sights
Let’s start with the obvious: the Colosseum. The Colosseum is a must-see on any visit to Rome. Once, 50,000 Romans marvelled at bloody gladiator fights there – yes, just like in Hollywood films. The fights were about naked survival – and this extraordinary atmosphere can still be felt when you visit the Colosseum. It helps to book a guided tour to explore the truly impressive structure, which, by the way, is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
In the immediate vicinity of the Colosseum are numerous other sights that every visitor to Rome should have marvelled at. One of them is the Roman Forum, once the centre of the Roman Empire. Many remains are still there – and definitely worth a visit.
Of course, the Pantheon must not be missing from the Rome list. In the Roman building, which was converted into a church, you can marvel at a large hole in the dome, which makes the Pantheon earthquake-proof. Many believers also feel particularly connected to heaven when they stand directly under this opening, which then virtually connects heaven and earth.
Vatikan City
The smallest independent country in the world, one of the most important places for Catholics and the seat of the Pope: we are talking, of course, about Vatican City. This tiny state is located in the middle of Rome and belongs on every visitor’s list. Start your tour in the Sistine Chapel, where you can admire Michelangelo’s impressive ceiling painting.
Then it’s off to St Peter’s Basilica, centre of the Catholic Christian world. The church is huge and really impressive – be careful not to get lost… By the way, the Vatican Museums, which house world-famous relics and art treasures, are also very interesting.
Pizza, pasta and ice cream!
In Rome, there are so many possibilities for indulgence. Three guesses what we will definitely eat: That’s right, pizza and pasta! Stroll through the narrow streets of the city and enjoy yourself in small restaurants and cafés.
Delicious ice cream is also an absolute must in Rome! Conveniently, you can find it on every corner – and it tastes unbelievably good. The best thing to do is just try it out to find your favourite gelateria… Small tip: Check out where Italians buy their ice cream – they always know where it’s trendy and tastes best. You can then enjoy your ice cream scoops at the world-famous Trevi Fountain, for example, while watching the people taking photos of the fountain. By the way, you should keep the change from your ice cream purchase handy and then throw it over your right shoulder into the fountain. That brings good luck…
