THE RELIABILITY / SAFETY ON SITE

The airport fire department at Weeze Airport consists of a full-time fire brigade. The training is based on the regulations of the basic training for the volunteer fire brigade (FwDv – Training). The head of the airport fire department since 01.04.2021 is Oliver Käfer.

The employees of the fire department also carry out other activities during their working hours, such as bird control, etc.

24 HOUR SERVICE TASKS

The functions of the fire brigade staff are performed on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year, with a guard strength of 1 / 7 men.

In the event of an alarm, each fire brigade colleague occupies his or her vehicle assigned by the duty officer.

  • 1 duty officer
  • 2 engineers for airfield fire-fighting vehicles
  • 1 engineer for emergency vehicles
  • Ambulance / rescue component
  • Birdcontrol vehicle

TASKS

The airport fire brigade is responsible for emergency planning, ensuring fire protection, aircraft recovery and preventive fire protection at the airport. In the event of a major incident (aircraft in distress), it is supported by the fire brigades from the Kleve district. These are the fire brigades of Weeze, Kevelaer, Goch and Uedem as well as relief organisations (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, Malteser Hilfsdienst).

On the airside, the airport fire brigade works according to the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The ICAO defines the requirements for fire brigades at all civil airports worldwide.

In the event of an emergency, the fire brigade also takes on reconnaissance tasks, as well as initial measures, e.g. triggering the fire alarm system, or provides technical assistance.

The airport fire brigade also assists passengers with limited mobility when boarding and disembarking from aircraft.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

At the special training centre (TBW) on the grounds of Weeze Airport, special training is conducted for the colleagues of the airport fire brigade. Every firefighter undergoes this special training every year. The contents of the special training include breathing apparatus exercises, aircraft and helicopter fire fighting and building fire. In addition, the colleagues in the three watch departments receive further training in various training topics on a weekly basis.

OPERATIONAL AREA

The operational area covers the entire airport site with all buildings and open areas. In the event of damage involving an aircraft, the airport fire brigade deploys within a five-mile radius (approx. 8 km) as requested by the public fire brigade.
