Places of interest in Lisbon

Anyone visiting Lisbon for the first time will discover a sight to see on almost every corner. Among the best-known highlights are the Torre de Belém, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the Praça do Comércio and the Castelo de São Jorge.

Another characteristic feature of Lisbon is its numerous viewing points, known as ‘miradouros’. From here, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city’s red roofs and the Tagus.

The Elevador de Santa Justa is also one of the Portuguese capital’s landmarks. This historic lift connects the lower Baixa district with the higher Chiado district.

Alfama and the famous No. 28 tram

A city break in Lisbon wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Alfama. This historic district is one of the oldest parts of the city. Narrow alleyways, small stairways, traditional houses and hidden squares create a very special atmosphere.

Running right through the heart of it all is one of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks: the historic Tram 28. The yellow tram winds its way through narrow streets, connecting some of the city’s most beautiful neighbourhoods.

So if you want to experience Lisbon in the traditional way, you should definitely plan a ride on the tram.

Discover Belém

The Belém district evokes memories of Portugal’s great age of discovery. Some of Lisbon’s most famous sights are situated right on the banks of the Tagus.

Particularly worth seeing are the Torre de Belém and the imposing Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Monument to the Discoveries, is also situated right by the river.

And there’s one more thing that’s an essential part of any visit to Belém: pastéis de nata. These small Portuguese puff-pastry tarts with a creamy filling are famous far beyond the country’s borders and are simply a must-try on any trip to Lisbon.

Enjoy Portuguese cuisine

Lisbon is a superb destination for food lovers. You can discover Portuguese cuisine in small restaurants, traditional tascas, cafés and modern eateries.

Fresh fish and seafood feature on the menus, as do bacalhau, grilled sardines and numerous other Portuguese specialities. And, of course, no coffee is complete without a pastel de nata.

In the evening, it’s well worth a visit to Bairro Alto or Alfama. Here you’ll find numerous restaurants, bars and traditional fado venues.

Beach holidays and the Atlantic Ocean

A city break and a beach holiday can be combined perfectly in Lisbon. There are numerous beaches along the Atlantic coast just outside the Portuguese capital.

Popular destinations include Cascais and Estoril. This means you can explore Lisbon’s sights in the morning and spend the afternoon by the sea.

It is precisely this combination of city life, culture and the Atlantic coast that makes Lisbon such a varied holiday destination.

Sintra – the perfect day trip from Lisbon

If you have a little more time to spare, you should plan a day trip to Sintra. Around 25 kilometres from Lisbon, visitors can expect an extraordinary cultural landscape featuring palaces, historic villas, gardens and wooded hills.

Sintra, with its cultural landscape, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular destinations for day trips around Lisbon.

Together with Cascais and the Atlantic coast, a holiday in Lisbon can therefore easily be complemented by a variety of other day trips.

Lisbon in every season

Thanks to its mild climate, Lisbon is a great destination for a city break almost all year round. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant, when sightseeing, day trips and long walks through the city can be easily combined.

In summer, too, the sunshine and proximity to the beaches of the Atlantic coast are a major draw. This makes Lisbon an attractive destination for both a short city break and a longer holiday in Portugal.
